Question: Should my newly seeded lawn be fertilized?
Newly seeded lawns need to be fertilized with a high phosphorous fertilizer (such as 18-24-12) to aid in quick and vigorous germination and root growth. Starter fertilizer applications should be done at the same time as seeding and repeated two weeks later to encourage continued seed germination. After another two weeks, the lawn should be fertilized regularly with a slow-release nitrogen based fertilizer.

Question: I have been watering my lawn as much as possible and I still have brown spots. What am I doing wrong?

More than likely, the brown spots you are seeing are not related to lack of water. During the summer months, grubs and fungus can attack the lawn when it is stressed from the heat. If the problem is fungus, watering extra is only going to make the problem worse. Both grubs and fungus need to be treated immediately to limit the amount of damage to the lawn. These problems are not uncommon and can be controlled fairly easily. The best thing to do if you experience a problem like this is to give us a call to come evaluate the situation.

Question: When should I mow my new grass?

New sod should be mowed two weeks after it is installed. Newly seeded lawns should be mowed two weeks after the grass reaches one inch tall.

Question: How long do I need to wait after you fertilize to water my lawn?

It is a good rule of thumb to wait at least four hours to water after a fertilizer application. If weeds were sprayed, it could be possible to wash away the weed killer. You should also check the paperwork left behind by the applicator for special instructions.

Question: How long do I need to wait to mow after you fertilize my lawn?

It is best to wait at least 24 hours after a fertilizer application to mow. The reason for this is sometimes the fertilizer pellets will set on top of the leaf blades for a short period before working their way down to the ground.
